Sustainable Musicianship – Independent Course, 7.5 Higher Education Credits

Why Mental Training and Sustainable Musicianship Are Important for Musicians

As a musician, you face unique and sometimes difficult challenges that differ from many other professions. Stage fright, physical tension in the body, and the constant demand to perform at the highest level can affect both your well-being and your artistic expression. These factors often create a life filled with stress and anxiety, which in turn can limit your ability to play freely and with full presence.

Mental training offers you concrete and practical tools to handle these challenges in a sustainable and long-term way. By working with sustainable musicianship, you learn to create balance between body and mind, reduce performance anxiety, and rediscover joy and creativity in your music making. This balance is crucial for a musician’s continued development and health, both physically and mentally.

Integrating mental training into your work is a cornerstone of sustainable musicianship because it not only improves performance but also helps you sustain a long and healthy career.

Mental training and sustainable musicianship are not quick fixes but a process where you train your mental strength like building muscles through practice. By developing your ability to manage stress and performance demands, you can achieve better focus, increased presence, and greater artistic freedom when performing music.

My Experience in Music, Mental Training, and Sustainable Musicianship

Through my work as principal player in the Malmö Symphony Orchestra and as a university lecturer at Malmö Academy of Music, I have personally experienced how mental training can change a musician’s relationship to both performances and practice. I know how concert nerves can feel like a heavy burden, how tight jaws and body tensions can affect sound and expression, and how self-critical thoughts can create obstacles to growth.

Having effective and proven tools to manage these challenges is essential to develop and enjoy music-making in a way that promotes sustainable musicianship. I have worked on integrating mental training and sustainability principles into my own profession and now educate other musicians to find their own paths toward mental well-being and a high-performing, yet sustainable, musical life.

What You Will Learn in the Course

In my workshops, proven methods from sports psychology are used, specially adapted for musicians. You will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical, easy-to-use techniques that strengthen your mental focus and make you more resilient to stress and pressure. Together, we explore:

  • Practical tools to manage stage fright and stress, both in everyday life and before important performances.
  • Techniques for establishing sustainable musicianship and effective practice habits that prevent burnout and promote long-term development.
  • Methods to find and maintain inner motivation and joy in your music, even when facing challenges and pressure.
  • Strategies to become more body-aware and to handle physical tension that can negatively impact both technique and expression.
  • Ways to develop a more constructive relationship to perfectionism and self-criticism, so they don’t hinder but rather drive your growth forward.

The training combines theory with practical exercises you can immediately apply in your daily musical life. All methods are based on current research and my own musical experience, focusing on supporting you in long-term and sustainable musicianship.

Professional and Research-Based Coaching for Sustainable Musicianship

I am a certified ACC coach through the International Coach Federation and a certified mental trainer via Unestål Education. This means you receive scientifically grounded and professional guidance. My goal is for you to develop both as a musician and as a human being and to feel confident using the tools you learn in the course to sustainably reach your goals and improve both mentally and physically.
